    Some Ramblings from the Dawg

Before I ramble on about twitter, gitmo, and other things on my mind, just a quick recap about our trip to Des Moines this morning.

Went off to Des Moines to visit Aunt Louise and do some shopping at wally world. Of course, Coco the dog was knowing we were taking off, so as usual she got into a snit and would have nothing to do with us, nor could we bribe her with snacks. She does not like it when we leave for any amount of time. Plus she knows that she will not get her morning visit with the neighbor next door. When we did get home, she did go outside while we unloaded the van, but as soon as I closed the van door, she went running off to our neighbor. So she got her visit complete with snacks from the neighbor and some loving. Wife went and got her and she is back to being happy again. At present she is leashed outside enjoying the sun and the warm weather.

Aunt Louise was happy to see us as wife brought her some roast (cut up small), potatoes and some other goodies for her to have for either lunch or supper. AL said she would probably eat it all for supper, since lunch was already ordered up. Did get AL situated in her new electric chair, as the other one was taken out this morning. She at first did not like the new chair as it hurt her lower back, but after some messing with the controls and a comfy pillow, she pronounced it good enough for now.

Below is Bizarro, and that is probably what would happen to me if I won a million dollars!

Belarc Advisor – When you want to know just what’s inside your PC, few utilities will give you as many details as the free Belarc Advisor. Belarc gathers all kinds of data – from the BIOS version of your motherboard to the activation numbers for Windows and Microsoft Office – and displays them in a Web page that’s stored on your computer. It can even tell you if you’re up to date on your security patches.

Hahahahah….saw this while reading the Houston Chronicle online. It is done by Nick Anderson, their editorial cartoonist. He has always made me laugh at his cartoons over the years.

Senate votes to block funds for Guantanamo closure. Despite our president who wants to shut down Gitmo and bring the detainees here, our senators in a vote of 90-6 said no funds to do so. Hurrah for 90 of our senators!

Ah twitter! I am on there, http://www.twitter.com/iowadawg, if you want to come join the fun and follow me. But I must say, the more followers one gets, the more noise one must filter out. I try to read all the tweets by those I follow, but they now are coming at the rate of upwards of 10 a minute, making it harder and harder to keep up with everybody. So I decided that I would pare down my followers to only those that amuse me in some way, who actually interact with me, tweet stuff that I find interesting. That means I am unfollowing all those that have got to tweet about the news constantly (hey, I read the freaking news on chron.com, google and other news sites). Same with those that constantly have to tweet about the music they are listening to. Damn, I don’t tweet every time I hear a song! And to be truthful, I have to unfollow those that are region specific as I don’t care about housing markets in Utah, or the latest council news of some town in Alabama. Same with those who tweet in another language, though I am sure they might amuse me but only in english as I am only english (helluva mixture of Maine/Texas/Iowa, but still english). And to be fair, I am sure that a number of those that follow me use any of the above reasons to unfollow me. Or unfollow me because I may not amuse them or give them information they want.

Now I come to the worst of the lot, the cotton picking people that constantly tweet about selling this, join that, or you must buy this latest and greatest doodad. Again, now and again I may tweet about something I want to sell or want people to join, but not on a daily basis much less constantly. The most I do every day is pass out links to my blogs and sites where people can read or get something free. That I do not mind from others as I have found and read many interesting sites and blogs that are tweeted. Little give and take there really. I am trying out a service that will tweet out ads for me to make money, but that is like only one to three times a day. And if the service is not worth it, my followers won’t see those ads anymore. Of course, if I run across another such service or someone tweets about one, I will try. My thoughts are, such ads in moderation are not bad, though at times I have noticed a few of my followers leave me after such an ad. Bottom line for me? Twitter is for just having fun, not for constant marketing of some product or service. Some may disagree with me and say that I am marketing every time I post a link to one of my blogs or sites, but that is something I don’t believe is really marketing.

Sorry, the very damn worst of the lot on twitter? Those that tweet out schemes to get thousands of followers. Those, I unfollow at once! I don’t want thousands of followers that are just following me because of some scheme they got roped into, but rather followers who want to follow me. Enough said, don’t tweet these crazy schemes!
