    Down in Humeston

This morning, we went down to Humeston, Iowa. They were having their yearly watermelon festival. And no, we left before the free watermelon! Actually went because two of my wife’s sisters were in floats in the parade. Their high school classes were having a reunion. 1960 and 1965 classes of Mormon Trails. Big whoops! hahahahahahah…just had so damn much hilarity in the heat, yes heat with no breeze! Funny as we were standing there over the loudspeakers came an announcement that if anyone was feeling faint because of the heat, the library had air conditioning and they were welcome to go there to cool down.

Humeston is only about 45 minutes from here, on state roads. So not bad of a trip there or back. Unlike the others, we came right home after lunch and a short visit at one of the classmates home. The rest all made trips down to Garden Grove, where the family had lived way back when. And of course some went to Leon to the cemetary there. Visit the graves of a bunch of the family. Ira Ryan is buried there. Big funny among wife and her family about me and Ira being buddines. Ira died like in 1845 or so! Interesting story about him and his family (yes, wife and all came from him), especially his dad. Wrote here about it, but too lazy to find the post. Let me recap that Ira’s dad had come to America from Ireland to fight in the American Revolution. He was a Catholic priest, but decided in his old age to get married. Thus Ira and the start of the Ryan clan in Iowa.

If you are ever in Humeston area, do stop and visit the town. Pretty vibrant town now and not one but 3 restaurants now. All of them busy.

Now for some pictures. Like you are waiting for these!

This one is at the home we visited. Back yard and rest of yards are beautiful. This stone building and all the surrounding stone walls will look as good soon as it did a few years back. They had it all cleaned out as it was all overgrown and in bad shape. Once they bring in more dirt, plant flowers, and fill the moat with water, it will be gorgeous again.

Just a couple of pictures of when wife, son, and grandkids went to Chicago about 2 weeks ago. This was taken the evening before they went to the game.

Wife, grandson Aiden,  granddaughter Miranda, and son Doug. Yes, Wrigley Field!

They put up this homemade sign so that wife could have this picture just for Aunt Louise. The official photographer for the Cubs took some pictures of them like this.

Don’t know the exact date of her death, but the OLDEST serving Postmaster has died at 94! Yes, she worked until she died. Read the write up, as she was in Ohio, if anyone of you know Bentonville. Postmaster

Not going to tell you exactly how old I was when I retired as Postmaster. But she was 4 years older than my dad and I retired such that if I had stuck around for about 40 years, I would of been her age.

RMS Carpathia Torpedoed by German Submarine (1918) on this date.

The RMS Carpathia was a Cunard Line transatlantic passenger steamship that first became famous for rescuing more than 700 survivors of the Titanic disaster in 1912. Six years later, during WWI, the Carpathia was travelling in a convoy when it was torpedoed off the east coast of Ireland by the German submarine U-55. Many of the passengers and crew members were rescued by the HMS Snowdrop the following day. When was the steamship’s wreckage discovered? More…

And why is MSM (main stream media) not all upset and getting after our president for taking a vacation right now? After all, there is a crisis down at the Gulf of Mexico. And this was the president that on television told all Americans to visit the Gulf Coast. So where does he go for his vacation? MAINE! Geesh, this man does not have a freaking clue….
